There's a new research tool for all stuents to use. Go to http://www.nettrekker.com/ and log in. Here, you can do research for your classes and get reliable websites that your teachers will approve. Also, you can get things in Spanish, and you can have it search for websites at your reading level. Also great resources for ESL.

BCCHS book club! We are reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. We will convene in May.

Announcements for Students:

NHS will be holding Spring Fling this Friday, 4/11! 7-10 pm. See an NHS member to buy tickets. All guests must be finalized by Tuesday of this week. Two guest limit per BCCHS student.

NHS applications are due Monday, 4/14. All sophomores and juniors that are interested must have his/her application in Ms. Lau's mailbox (there is a manila folder labeled NHS in there) by 8:30am on 4/14.

NHS will be holding cancer presentations during advisory this week. Meet in advisory first and your advisor will bring you to room 1323. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday, 4/8 - 9th graders will report to room 1323 during advisory first half of 5th period. 10th graders will report to room 1323 during advisory second half of 5th period. Thursday, 4/10 - 12th graders will report to room 1323 during first half of senior institute (tentative-update to come!). 11th graders will report to room 1323 during advisory second half of 5th period.

NCSM is Wednesday April 16th. All parents are invited (presentations will be from 10:00-11:45).

There is a meeting for all students who need community service and would like to help prepare for the conference or help during the event on Tuesday April 8th at 3:00pm in room 1008.

There is a meeting for all NCSM presenters on Wednesday April 9th during 7th period in Room 1125. You must make sure it is okay with yur teachers before you come.

This Wednesday in advisory you will fill out the Learning Environment Survey. These surveys are your chance to give feedback on how the school is for you. Please fill these out thoughtfully and return them to your advisor at the end of advisory in the sealed envelope.

AP applications will be distributed in advisory next Monday, April 14. 10th and 11th graders may apply for AP English. 10th grade may apply for: AP US History and AP Studio Art. 11th graders may apply for: AP Biology, AP Comparative Government and College Level Calculus.

Applications for the 2008 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) are now available. To submit an application, students can visit the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) website at www.nyc.gov/dycd. The deadline to submit a complete application is May 16.

SYEP is a seven-week program that runs from July 1 through August 16. Participants can work up to 25 hours a week while earning $7.15 an hour in job placements that include government agencies, hospitals, summer camps, nonprofits, small businesses, law firms, museums, and sports and retail organizations. All New York City residents between the ages of 14 and 21 are eligible to apply. For additional information, call 311 or the DYCD Youthline at (800) 246-4646. Calling all students to join the Gala Planning Committee! This club will meet for the next few weeks to help plan our 10 year gala celebration. Community service is awarded. Come make collages of pictures of alumni and current students, posters and designs, and help plan the evening! We will meet on Wednesday, after school, in the main office conference room, at 3 pm. If you'd like to join, but can't make that time, please leave a note in Ms. Perez-Katz's mailbox.

The book club books are in! Join our April-May book club. We are reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer. This is the story of a young boy, who loses his father on 9/11. He embarks on a journey throughout NYC, looking for a lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father. Pick up your copy in Ms. Perez-Katz's office. We will be meeting to discuss the book on Thursday, May 15 at 3 pm. This book club is open to all students, parents, and teachers.

April is National Poetry Month! April 17 is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Be sure to celebrate your love of poetry this month! In this vein, please share this poem with your class:

SAT - Princeton Reveiw Score Back

Students who completed the SAT at our school on Saturday, March 29th will receive their score report and an overview their results on Tuesday, April 8th at 3:00pm in Rm. 1220. Please remember to bring the SAT test booklet with you.

BARUCH COLLEGE NOW Summer 2008

July 7 - August 14

College Now at Baruch College invites qualified students at your school to take a course at the college for free in the summer. To qualify, a student must meet the following criteria:

Student must be a high school junior or senior in a NYC public high school in fall 2007
Student must have scored at least a 50 on the Critical Reading section of the PSAT, or at least a 480 on the critical reading section of the SAT, or at least a 75 on the English Language Arts Regents.
Student must have scored at least a 50 on the Mathematics section of the PSAT, or at least a 480 on the Mathematics section of the SAT or at least a 75 on the Mathematics A Regents Exam or the Sequential II Regents.

Students must come to the College Office for applications. Applications should be submitted to the College Now office no later than May 16th. The classes being offered are: Micro-Economics, Personal Finance, Introductory to Financial Mathematics, Precalculus and Elements of Calculus, Public Adminsitration in Modern Society. Students will find the list of classes and course outlines posted by the bulletin board next to the College Office.

H E R E & N O W - Summer Journalism Workshop July 14 - August 7

This is a summer program for students who will be 11th and 12th grade in fall. Students will get a rich and realistic overview of jounalism. They will learn about news reporting, writing and interviewing and produce a newspaper under the direction of a journalism instructor. Students will also meet many professional journalists working in the business. Last years speakers included jounalists from the Associated Press, NY Times, and NY1 News. Applications are available from the College Office, and must be submitted to the College Now office by May 12th.
